Return of the buttons: The ten best new cars with physical buttons
At Carwow, we've had enough of touchscreen cars, so we've put together a list of our favorite new cars that still – or again – have real buttons.
Our team of car experts drives a lot of new cars – and one of their biggest annoyances is the increasing reliance on touchscreens – because not everything can be controlled sensibly through them. No wonder that car expert Daniel Hohmeyer and our test editor Andreas Heise drive older models in their private lives. Here, the touchscreen has not yet moved in.
We certainly don't want to rant about modernity and rant about all the newfangled technologies, but sometimes old things really are better. Fiddling around on a screen just to adjust the air vents instead of simply pressing a button cannot be considered progress – we explicitly mean you, VW ID.7.
But there's good news, too, because there are still new cars with beautifully simple interiors, equipped with simple physical buttons and controls that are easy to use while driving. Here are our 10 favorite models we've driven that have physical controls for all the essential features, including air conditioning and media.

1. Honda Civic
The latest Honda Civic has one of our favorite interiors of all new cars. Not because it looks particularly exciting, but because it's solidly built and user-friendly. The metallic climate controls look and feel great, and we also like that they're easy to reach.
There are quite tall people in our team who sit quite far back in most cars. This can lead to the controls being just out of reach. In the Civic, however, this is not a problem, everything is easy to reach. The driving position is also pleasant and sporty.
2. Renault 5
We'd been looking forward to driving the new Renault 5 since the concept was unveiled in 2021, and this funky little electric car didn't disappoint when we finally got behind the wheel. It's fun to drive, it's cheap to maintain, and it looks fantastic.
Das retro-moderne Interieur verfügt außerdem über eine ordentliche Reihe von Kippschaltern für alle wichtigen Klimaregelungen, was beweist, dass man auch heute noch einen minimalistischen Innenraum gestalten kann, ohne auf die richtigen Knöpfe zu verzichten. Allerdings verliert Renault einige Punkte dafür, dass die Bedienelemente für die Sitzheizung auf dem Bildschirm untergebracht sind.
3. Dacia Duster
Wir haben eine echte Schwäche für den Dacia Duster, weil er ein ehrliches und einfaches Arbeitstier mit einem coolen, robusten Design ist. Der Innenraum mag nicht besonders edel wirken, aber er ist auf jeden Fall robust und benutzerfreundlich.
Die meisten Autohersteller verzichten aus Kostengründen auf Knöpfe im Innenraum, aber das hat Dacia nicht davon abgehalten, eines der günstigsten SUVs Deutschlands mit einfachen, klar beschrifteten Knöpfen für die am häufigsten verwendeten Bedienelemente auszustatten.
4. VW T-Cross
Jedes Auto, das in der Farbe „Rubber Ducky Yellow“ erhältlich ist, wird bei uns gut ankommen, und der VW T-Cross ist zusätzlich ein brillanter kleiner SUV. Wir mögen es, wie komfortabel er sich fahren lässt, und wir schätzen die enorme Praktikabilität, die er trotz seiner kompakten Größe bietet.
Die höherwertigen Versionen des T-Cross werden durch eine Reihe nerviger Touch-Schieberegler für die Klimasteuerung getrübt, was jedoch beim preiswerten Modell nicht der Fall ist. Dieses Modell verfügt über altmodische Drehknöpfe und bietet eine umfangreiche Ausstattung zu einem angemessenen Preis.
5. Audi A3
Wenn du auf der Suche nach einem eleganten deutschen Fließheckmodell mit richtigen Knöpfen im Innenraum bist, hast du nur die Wahl zwischen dem Audi A3 und der Mercedes A-Klasse. Wir würden uns für den Audi entscheiden, da der Mercedes über nervige berührungsempfindliche Lenkradsteuerungen und einen billig wirkenden Innenraum verfügt.
Der A3 fühlt sich innen toll verarbeitet an, und die Kippschalter für die Klimaanlage sind schön in das eckige Armaturenbrett integriert. Auch das Fahrgefühl ist angenehm. Ein BMW 1er mag vielleicht mehr Spaß machen, aber der Audi ist praktischer und im Alltag einfacher zu handhaben.
6. Skoda Karoq
Skoda ist bekannt für seinen schnörkellosen Ansatz in Sachen Praktikabilität, und dafür haben wir die Marke schon immer geliebt. Wenn du auf der Suche nach einem neuen Familien-SUV bist, dann ist der Skoda Karoq eine der besten Optionen. Er mag vielleicht nicht aufregend sein, aber er ist enorm geräumig, komfortabel und günstig im Unterhalt.
Außerdem hat er eine sehr einfache Innenausstattung mit übersichtlichen Tasten. Wir möchten auch den neuen Skoda Superb und Kodiaq erwähnen, die beide mit den neuen „Smart Dials” der Marke ausgestattet sind, mit denen man durch Drücken zwischen den Funktionen wechseln kann. Das ist eine gute Möglichkeit, viele Funktionen in eine kleine Oberfläche zu integrieren, die auch unterwegs einfach zu bedienen ist.
7. Citroen C3
Der Citroen C3 ist ein großartiges Kleinwagenmodell, wenn du etwas Bezahlbares, Komfortables und Geräumiges suchst. Je nachdem, was besser zu deinem Lebensstil passt, kannst du zwischen Benzin-, Hybrid- oder Elektromodellen wählen. Wir bevorzugen jedoch das Fahrgefühl des elektrischen e-C3.
Der Innenraum wirkt stellenweise etwas billig, aber das ist bei einem erschwinglichen Modell wie diesem zu erwarten. Er verfügt außerdem über praktische Kippschalter für die Klimaregelung, die auch beim größeren C3 Aircross, dem Opel Frontera und dem neuen Fiat Grande Panda zu finden sind.
8. Mazda 3
When we tested the Mazda 3 and the BMW 1 Series side by side, we came to the conclusion that we would rather spend our money on the Mazda. It looks better, at least in our eyes, is almost as fun to drive and the interior is more pleasant.
Unlike the BMW with its touchscreen-centric interior, it has buttons on the dashboard, including a rotary knob for the infotainment system. These are becoming increasingly rare, but we prefer them while driving, as you don't have to try to keep your finger steady on the screen when driving over bumps.
9. Toyota Yaris Cross
We tested the Toyota Yaris Cross a while ago and although it doesn't make a car enthusiast's heart beat faster, this small SUV is exceptionally suitable for everyday use thanks to its smooth-running, economical hybrid engine.
The interior is also easy to use thanks to the physical buttons and switches. If we had to name one small point of criticism, it would be the climate keys, which are a bit too small. But that's splitting hairs in an otherwise clear and simple interior.
10. Kia EV3
You'll have to look closely to find the buttons on the Kia EV3's dashboard, as they're so cleverly integrated into the sleek dashboard, but once you know where they're located, they're pleasant and easy to use.
The EV3 is also one of our favourite electric SUVs here at Carwow. You can get a model with a range of up to 600 kilometres, it's spacious in the rear and the interior also looks great - as long as you avoid the somewhat sparsely equipped entry-level model.
